Heavy Equipment Tire Inflation Safety Guide
Inflating heavy equipment tires isn’t just part of the job, it’s one of the most high-risk tasks in the shop.
Improper inflation procedures can lead to catastrophic blowouts and serious or fatal injuries. That’s why getting it right is critical not only for the safety of your technicians but also for the performance and reliability of your customers’ equipment.
In this quick-reference guide, we’ll break down the essential dos and don’ts of tire inflation for heavy-duty equipment. Whether you’re training new staff or reviewing best practices, this resource will help you avoid common mistakes and maintain a safe, efficient workflow in the shop. From personal protective gear to inflation cages, here’s what your team needs to know and do before inflating a single tire.
- Wear protective eyewear even when inflating from a safe distance away.
- Inspect tires before inflation looking for possible zipper characteristics such as punctures, injuries, distortions, and exposed body ply cords.
- Mark and scrap tires with any zipper characteristics found.
- Mount tires that have passed inspection and initially inflate to 5 psi to seal the beads.
- Transfer mounted tires to a safety cage to continue the inflation process.
- Inflate from a safe distance using remote inflation tools & inflation cages.
- Cages SHOULD NOT be bolted to the ground.
- Stand in an area facing the tire tread outside the area of trajectory.
- Inflate tires with OSHA compliant devices that include a clip-on air chuck, an in-line valve with a pressure gauge or pressure regulator and sufficient length of hose.
- Train staff regularly on proper procedures.
Please refer to the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association's Tire Informatin Service Bulletin and the Tire Industry Association for detailed inspection procedures to identify potential sidewall zipper ruptures and in-depth inflation guides.
- Begin any inflation procedures without protective eyewear.
- Inflate a tire with visible damage.
- Guess the tire pressure or eyeball the inflation.
- Use damaged or unapproved hoses.
- Stand in front of the tire during inflation.
- Bolt down your tire cage. Cages are designed to work freestanding and in the event of a tire explosion the bolts would become projectiles.
- Ignore temperature impact on tire pressure.
The AME OTR Inflation / Deflation Kit is ideal for large AG and Construction OTR tire service inflation / deflation. The kit promotes safety during the process by keeping tire techs out of trajectory rim/wheel area danger zone. Comes equipped with all hoses and fittings in Hi-Vis Carrying Bag.
