Your Cribbing Safety Guide
The Tire Industry Association (TIA) states that the load on heavy machinery should be shared between the jack and the cribbing to help stabilize large components of the heavy equipment during maintenance.
Cribbing can be used to support the heavy equipment at a greater height as they have a larger support area (creating a temporary, but secure elevated structure) than jack stands, better distributing the load on softer ground.
Jack stands, or hydraulic devices, which are used to lift equipment for light truck maintenance SHOULD NOT be relied upon to keep heavy equipment elevated.

- Use the cribbing blocks in interlocking rows of three
- Use the top jack plate that covers the ENTIRE surface of the block(s) to maximize the working load limit.
- Use a jack plate when placing a jack or load on cribbing.
- Use cribbing pieces horizontally.
- Ensure blocks are butted next to each other and additional layers are placed 90 degrees from the lower layer when using pyramid surface.
- Use lower plate in conjunction with upper plate if using cribbing to raise jack to lift point.
- Inspect and reaplce WLL tags and handles that are worn or missing.

- Leave gaps between cribbing pieces or remove the center block in 3x3 configuration.
- Use a jack plate that does not cover the ENTIRE surface of the block(s). This will create a point load and drastically reduce the WLL of the block.
- Place a load or jack directly on top of cribbing.
- Use cribbing pieces vertically.
- Stack cribbing, equipped with interlock ribs, on side other than pyramid surface, unless interlocking.
- Fail to use a lower plate in conjunction with an upper plate if using cribbing to raise jack to lift point.
- Use a pieces of BROKEN cribbing as a "smaller block". Any bent, cracked, or broken cribbing must be removed from service.
Ensure the safety of your equipment and personnel by adhering to these cribbing safety guidelines. Always prioritize proper techniques and regular inspections to prevent accidents during heavy machinery maintenance.
