Proper wheel installation is critical to preventing wheel-off incidents, equipment damage, and serious injuries. Following the RIST process helps ensure every wheel is installed safely and correctly.

The RIST Process
R: Remove Debris. Ensure all rust, debris, and corrosion are removed before inspection.
I: Inspect. Inspect all components for excessive wear and cracks, and replace if needed.
S: Snug. Snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
T: Torque. Torque the lug nuts to proper specifications.
What to Look For
Stop and address any of the following before installation:
- Excessive rust or corrosion
- Damaged studs
- Damaged or cracked wheels
- Debris on mounting surfaces
- Worn or damaged lug nuts
- Incorrect components
Rubber Inc. Recommends
- Wear gloves and safety glasses, and work in a ventilated area.
- Never loosen rim or wheel assembly fasteners on an inflated multi-piece rim.
- Use a wire brush or stud/hub cleaner.
- Inspect the valve hole for damage.
- Use calibrated torque equipment set to manufacturer specs.
- Lubricate studs and wheel nuts per manufacturer/TIA specs (for example, 2 drops of oil on threads and flange washers for hub-piloted wheels). Proper lubrication is critical to achieving accurate torque and clamping force on hub-piloted wheels.
